What is the purpose of an assessment?
A formal assessment can be helpful or necessary for a variety of reasons. Below is a list of reasons parents commonly have for choosing to have a formal assessment conducted for their child.
Identify learning needs or learning disabilities.
Determine intellectual functioning.
Identify underlying behavioural diagnoses.
Assist with educational program planning and inform instructional support plans at school.
Target areas of learning requiring growth; use individual strengths to succeed at school.
Who should be assessed?
Students struggling with academic material.
Students who are bored at school and/or suspected gifted profile.
Children exhibiting atypical or challenging behaviour at home and at school.
Children who appear to have extreme strengths and weakness or gaps in learning.
Students who appear anxious, withdrawn or struggling socially.

What does the assessment process look like?
The length and process depends on the type of assessment. As example, a psycho-educational assessment follows the format below.
An initial 30-minute virtual parent meeting to gather relevant background information.
Completion of a Child Development Questionnaire to get background information.
Two hours with the child to assess intellectual ability (completed at the first appointment).
Two hours with the child to assess academic skills (completed at the second appointment).
Psychologist gathers the parent and school data, scores all assessments and generates a report for the family.
Final parent meeting to discuss assessment results.

What does Collaborative Parent Coaching look like?
During a brief intake call we schedule our first session. During the first session, only the parents/guardians/adults attend. The session may be in person or virtual depending on your preference and availability. The first session is 1 hour and we discuss and explore your concerns as well as your parenting goals. The second session is a direct session with your child where we play games and engage in structured activities. The third session is again only for the parents/guardians/adults, where we discuss my informal assessment results, ideas from the first session, and new strategies and ideas as they arise. After the third session, we decide together what the frequency of the sessions will look like moving forward.
How do I know if Collaborative Parent Coaching is for me?
Parents today are more willing than ever to be active and engaged in their children’s upbringing. We are willing to do anything and everything to become the best parents we can be. What may surprise you is that the path to successful parenting does not have to be travelled alone. You are not limited to finding your way solely in books, podcasts, and so on. This path can be supportively forged in community, and with guidance from an experienced helping professionals who has done extensive learning, experiential training and continues to evolve in her own parenting and relationships as I support others.
Collaborative Parent Coaching involves a strengths-based approach to exploring parenting and designed to understand challenging and, sometimes confusing, behaviours in children or to help our children reach their true genuine potential.
